Deliverables

GCDS mandate

Contributes to: Innovation, Data-driven decisions, Valuable data

Cabinet empowered the Government Chief Data Steward (GCDS) – a role held by the Chief Executive of Stats NZ – with a mandate to:

  • set mandatory standards across government for the collection, management, and use of data
  • direct agencies to adopt common data capabilities (including data tools, linking infrastructure, and sharing platforms).

The GCDS’ approach to data leadership will continue to be through collaboration and partnership across government.

New tool for those using New Zealand’s data

Contributes to: Data-driven decisions, Valuable data

Stats NZ has developed the Data and Statistical Capability Framework – a conceptual framework describing the data and analytic capabilities required by those who manage, and interact with, government-held data. The framework provides users with a common language to discuss these capabilities.

As well as informing workforce planning and enabling users to identify capability strengths and gaps for individuals and teams, it contributes to career progression by identifying development opportunities within and across government.

Data Champions workshop

Contributes to: Data-driven decisions, Valuable data

More than 45 senior leaders from across government attended our free December 2018 workshop.

Environment Canterbury (ECan) shared their experiences of partnering with Stats NZ’s Data Capability Hub to develop a data strategy, which they can use to inform their work programme.

Orbica presented a case study on ECan’s use of data visualisation for public consultation on their long-term plan.

Legislative review – public consultation

Contributes to: Data-driven decisions, Valuable data

Public consultation on the review of the Statistics Act 1975 closed in November 2018, with 600 people having their say through formal submissions and a short poll. A summary of submissions will be published on the Stats NZ website when available.

High level snapshot from the short poll:

  • 96% of respondents considered it important that New Zealand has high quality official statistics that can be relied on.
  • 92% of respondents thought it important that government-held data can be safely shared and used for research and analysis to benefit New Zealanders.

Showcase: new look and feel for data.govt.nz

Data.govt.nz has a new look and feel, including new colours and layout. As the starting place for data conversations in New Zealand, the website is being expanded to give easy access to datasets and data-related information and resources to help people improve how they manage, use, and release data as New Zealand heads into its digital future.

Complementing stats.govt.nz, Stats NZ’s data-related work sits alongside content from the broader data and analytics community.

A collaboration with the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) means the website is run by both agencies, with DIA retaining responsibility for the data catalogue. Datasets from 158 organisations are accessible as open data (data that’s freely available to be used, reused, and redistributed by anyone for any purpose).

Stats NZ is responsible for developing resources on data management and for ensuring the right protections and safeguards are in place for New Zealand’s data.

Work is underway on new content and enhancements to the data catalogue.
