We believe that this data is crucial for our research, as it will not only help us better understand the current state of food waste in New Zealand but also support the formulation of effective strategies to reduce food waste.
We are student in the IT and DATA research program at the University of Auckland. I am currently engaged in an Internship project focusing on green environmental studies. Our research team is dedicated to exploring and addressing the issue of food waste to promote sustainable environmental development.
Our challenges and objectives: Addressing food affordbility in light of rising vegetable and diary production costs, to analyse the potential and existing waste data by modeling the data and forecast the future situation by appropriate algorithmn.
We use data science and appropriate algorithms to model the trend of food waste and nutrition among all New Zealand family.
Analyze data, generate insights, and shape future business plans.

I refer to your email of 4 December 2023 requesting, under the Official Information Act 1982, information relating to “The Latest Data on Food Waste in New Zealand”.
I have made enquiries with relevant teams and understand from the response received that the phrase “food waste”, in the bioeconomy context, relates to material that is disposed of in the retail and consumer parts of the value chain. Plant & Food Research primarily deals with material that is disposed of or under-valued from production, processing and distribution parts of the value chain. This falls under the term “food loss”.
I have been advised that while Plant & Food Research does not generally deal with the “food waste” part of the value chain, it is an active area that the University of Otago does work in and that you might like to make enquiries with the University of Otago if you have not done so already.
