Top 1000 Māori Baby Names (Male and Female) Since 1950

This would list the top 1000 Māori names for babies for each year from 1954. Provided as a csv file with "years" as columns (two colums for each year: male, female). Each row would contain the position of the name in the top 1000, with the top name in the first row and the 1000th name in the last row.

1) Understanding how names have evolved over time, how the popularity of names from Te Paipera Tapu (Judeo-Māori names) / pre-Paipera names has changed over time.

2) Provide those training Artificial Intelligence (AI) for automatic transcription / speech synthesis with a list of names likely to be encountered. This would ultimately allow designers to create tools for e.g. government that are capable of working with Māori names which is not currently the case for tools delivered by almost all AI service providers.

1) Providing the raw data for analysis using data-scientific tools

2) Provide a list of names that can be inserted into text, found in recordings or recorded in studio and supplied to an Artificial Intelligence during training.

Department of Internal Affairs

Data not available for release

Tēnā koe OIA request 22/23 0673 Request for Māori baby names Thank you for your Official Information Act (Act) request received by the Department of Internal Affairs (Department) on 27 March 2023. You requested – * Top 1000 Māori Baby Names (Male and Female) Since 1950 I must refuse your request pursuant to section 18(f) of the Act; the information requested cannot be made available without substantial collation or research. This is because the Department does not have the tools in place to collate and sort the data requested. As there is no data field that flags a name as “Māori” it would mean a considerable amount of manual work and research would be required of our Analytics and Reporting team to collate the data. Since 2016 the top 10 Māori names has been published on the following website, https://smartstart.services.govt.nz/news/baby-names-maori. This year, the top Māori names will be released around the time of celebration for Matariki in Aotearoa. Should it be of interest to you, a new civil registration system is coming in 2024. Further information on this can be found on the Department’s website here. It may be helpful for me to explain that data requests can be sent directly to the Department at OIA@dia.govt.nz. As this information may be of interest to other members of the public, the Department has decided to proactively release a copy of this response on the DIA website. All requestor data, including your name and contact details, will be removed prior to release. The released response will be made available here: https://www.dia.govt.nz/Official-Information-Act-Requests-2. You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
