citizenship granted to people who do not meet presence requirement of 1,350 days due to border closure during covid under exceptional circumstances

Please provide the number of applications approved for citizenship from March 2019. Who do not meet he presence requirement of 1,350 days due to the border closure and permanent resident not being able to enter New Zealand.

This would help large number of people who are not eligible to apply for New Zealand citizenship because they were stuck overseas. Borders were closed and only citizens were allowed to come back at one stage. this has affected large number of permanent residents who are trying to apply for citizenship and not able to meet the presence requirement because boarders were closed.

This data would guide all those people and help them to know wether they can apply for citizenship or not. it will also reduce the burden on call center of DIA as no information is available about this topic.

The time that your residence application was being processed by Immigration New Zealand cannot be counted towards meeting the presence requirement for citizenship. To meet the presence requirement for New Zealand citizenship, you must have been present in New Zealand while holding a resident visa for at least 240 days in each of the five years immediately prior to applying and at least 1,350 days overall.

If you have any further questions about citizenship, please email citizenship@dia.govt.nz.

Immigration had all documents for residency for 20month during covid, we have received residency and permanent residency after COVID ended, we have been in NZ for 5 and half years now! With the loss of 20mnts is there any way possible to add those months on for citizenship by grant? Keep in mind immigration had all our documents and accepted the residency application.

    Any info will be appreciated

    Hi,
Quick question "that my Auntie (72 years old widow woman) stuck overseas during Covid 19. She left NZ on 11/03/2020 and on the same day international border closed. Border then open after 6 months for citizen people only and later on opened for residents. The requirement was to have MIQ confirmation before you entered in the country. We and other family members in UK and Canada were trying on different times to get the MIQ booking for Auntie so that she can come back asap in the country and she got the confirmation of MIQ in December 2020 to arrive in March 2021. After that she never been out of the country. If she files her citizenship after Easter and then from last 5 years she is continuously in the country except that period from 11/03/2020 to 27/03/2021 due to international border of NZ closed. Please advise.
    Thanks

Not sure if it is the right portal to ask questions regarding citizenship eligibility, I tried https://dia.services.govt.nz/presence-calculator/ , but it returned the error " We cannot calculate if you meet the presence requirements for New Zealand citizenship by grant.
Check again in April 2024." though I have given the correct details.

    Kia ora Bob,
Yes, the days you leave or arrive in New Zealand are counted as days in New Zealand for the purposes of the “presence in New Zealand” requirement for citizenship.
If you have any questions about Citizenship please email citizenship@dia.govt.nz.

Do the day we fly out and day fly in counted towards the days we spent in NZ for citizenship purposes?

  • Kisan Patel

Hi I have finished more than 5 years after getting residency but my presence requirement doesn't meet because I was stucked in my home country because of covid and because of that I could not return back to NZ, does Ministry of internal affairs still considered that application and approved the citizenship under covid exemptions ? Any help regarding this will be really appreciated.
