The KiwiSaver system is in its infancy vs Australia's superannuation system - whilst existing data is of some use for providers to understand segmentation of the market to determine member needs based on demographics (e.g. proximity to a life event), there is very limited publicly availably cross-sectional data on the relationship between:
1) Age group and income
2) Age group and contribution rate
3) Income and contribution rate
Having this data available on a Kiwisaver system level would not only help participants better understand the structure of the KiwiSaver market, and it would also better inform broader policy discussion on contribution rates and the relative merits of voluntary vs compulsory contribution based on historical propensities.

I’m aware of both the monthly and annual data spreadsheets already provided by the IRD, however there are quite a few missing pieces so I’d like to go ahead with the original OIA request for cross-sectional matrices of member numbers with these categories/classes:
1. Age vs Income
2. Age vs contribution rate
3. Contribution rate vs income
The template/structure of these matrices for population with data have been emailed to info@data.govt.nz along with further detail as regards contribution rates. The data required is only for a single point in time, being the most recent available, however it would be nice to have historical data and/or these tables added to IRD's annual KiwiSaver data pack.
