Overseas ThunderMaps distributes Police call-out locations to the public via geo-fencing (for closed, non-confidential police events only) and this is helpful to neighbourhood watch and community groups that have an interest in knowing about policing activity in their respective neighbourhoods. More information about this service is found here: http://learn.thundermaps.com/columbia-fire-police-911-dispatch-alerts/ Making similar data available in New Zealand will be useful to NZ based neighbourhood watch groups and communities.

Request received
NZ Police is aware that different police jurisdictions use different mechanisms to disseminate crime statistics. ThunderMaps is one such mechanism, but is not the only one. Also, the operational IT systems used by different police jurisdictions vary in their capability to produce crime data. NZ Police is currently working with Statistics NZ to enhance the available crime data in New Zealand. To this end we recently began publishing statistics on crime victims using the NZ.Stat application at Statistics NZ. We are currently exploring with Statistics NZ how more granular crime data might be published in a way that protects the privacy of individuals. Furthermore, the NZ government ICT strategy (ref. initiative 13.1) is anticipated to create a common mechanism that agencies will be able to use to disseminate geographically specific data. NZ Police does not plan to implement a separate mechanism for disseminating police data. Rather, once the ICT strategy is implemented, NZ Police will explore the feasibility of using the new standard mechanism to disseminate geographically specific crime statistics.
