Trapping injury

Hi I am looking for statistics on injuries that occurred when people are setting traps or checking trap lines. Just the type of injury and number of injuries per year.

There are almost 10,000 groups involved in trapping for Predator Free 2050. Injury statistics would indicate if it is worthwhile to invest in traps that are safer or easier to operate. It would also be nice if the data includes information on whetehr the injured person was a volunteer or professions (e.g. trapper, farmer etc)

Having quantitative data will help to determine the value of investing in development of 'better' traps, or maybe invest in educational resources target at specific user groups

30 March 2026 Kia ora Your Official Information Act request, reference: GOV-046670 Thank you for your email of 11 March 2026, asking for the following information under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act): I am looking for statistics on injuries that occurred when people are setting traps or checking trap lines. Just the type of injury and number of injuries per year. Our response: Please find information on accepted trap-related injury claims lodged in the attached dataset here: https://catalogue.data.govt.nz/dataset/gov-046670-injuries-related-to-setting-or-checking-traps This includes claims lodged with ACC between 1 July 2020 and 24 March 2026. This information is provided by claim count, primary injury diagnosis, and primary injury site. Please refer to the ‘Notes and Caveats’ for the details about the information provided. Data limitations: The data set available to ACC is reliant on the information provided on an ACC45 injury claim form, which is completed when a person seeks treatment for their injury. The form has a free-text field ‘accident description’ where a person can provide a brief description of how their accident happened. This field is not mandatory to complete and not every client does so. Also, when this field is completed, there is considerable variation in the way accidents are described. As such, the data provided has been based on a variety of keywords related to traps, and this data should be considered indicative only. Claim counts fewer than four: Some of the values in the data provided only indicate that the claims count is fewer than 4 (denoted as <4). limits the potential for particular individuals, or matters specific to certain individuals, from being identified. This decision has been made under section 9(2)(a) of the Act. In making this decision, we have considered the public interest in making the information available and have determined that it does not outweigh the need to protect our clients’ privacy.
