The Ministry of Social Development Social Report 2016 (p.160) reports on the proportion of members who were women, by type of local authority, 1989-2013, and the proportion of mayors who were women, 1989-2013. I am wanting this data disaggregated by ethnicity, specifically by Maori vs. non-Maori women, to know what proportion of these women were Maori.
Claimants in the Mana Wahine Claim before the Waitangi Tribunal, Wai 2700, want to describe how the proportion of Maori women in local body governance has changed from 1985 to the present day.
Providing claimants with evidence of Maori women's participation in local body governance roles.
Data does not exist
The Department of Internal Affairs (the Department) does not maintain statistics for Mayors by ethnicity, specifically by Māori vs. non-Māori women. Accordingly, this part of your request is refused under section 18(g) of the OIA, that the information requested is not held by the Department. The Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) carries out surveys of elected officials following each triennial election. LGNZ’s most recent report, dated November 2023, can be accessed on their website: www.lgnz.co.nz/news/publications/elected-members-census/
