Description of the dataset you need I'm seeking data to support a photography business plan, specifically around three income streams: Fine art photography sales (giclée prints sold online, in galleries, and at markets) Commercial/freelance photography services for small businesses, tourism, retail, etc. Commissioned custom work for individuals and businesses I'd like any data related to: Estimated market size or value for these types of photography in NZ Business counts in industries that typically hire freelance photographers (e.g., tourism, hospitality, real estate, retail) Household spending on photography, art, or creative services Relevant insights from Household Economic Survey, Business Demography, or industry-level datasets I understand there may not be a perfect match — close approximations are fine.
Opening this data would solve the problem of small business owners and startup founders being unable to validate niche creative industry markets (like photography) due to a lack of accessible, segmented data on market size and consumer demand in Aotearoa.
...providing essential insights that enable small business owners in the creative sector to make evidence-based decisions about target markets, revenue potential, and customer segments — especially when applying for startup support or funding.

Kia ora. Please see response below. *Estimated market size or value for these types of photography in NZ The Annual Enterprise Survey (AES) collects financial data by industry, but only the top industry level. The data is published as information releases rather than datasets. See publications here: https://www.stats.govt.nz/publications/?categoryFiltersID=139&dateFiltersID=184&filters=Information%20releases%2CAnnual%20enterprise%20survey. We used to produce what we called the 'Business Performance Benchmarker' which used data from the AES, and that could break down the industries more. But this was experimental and we stopped updating this benchmarker in 2020. You could still have a look at it, to see what the finances were like in previous years. See https://statisticsnz.shinyapps.io/bpbench/. Ariā is where the classifications can be found, which you will need to search for the relevant industry. You can use this here https://aria.stats.govt.nz/aria/#ClassificationView:uri=http://stats.govt.nz/cms/ClassificationVersion/CARS5587. Otherwise if you're struggling with locating the correct (as close to) industry, you can use the Ariā coding service found here: https://aria.stats.govt.nz/aria-coding/search In the classification drop down box, enter in Industry and then in the search box next to it, type in the keywords you want to use to locate the correct industry. *Business counts in industries that typically hire freelance photographers (e.g., tourism, hospitality, real estate, retail) Business Demography Statistics includes data on number of busiesses by industry. I have pre-filtered the following dataset for you, you just need to select the relevant industry. You can use the filters to the left to do that: https://explore.data.stats.govt.nz/vis?fs[0]=Economy%2C0%7CBusiness%20demography%23CAT_BUSINESS_DEMOGRAPHY%23&pg=0&fc=Economy&bp=true&snb=14&df[ds]=ds-nsiws-disseminate&df[id]=BDS_BDS_002&df[ag]=STATSNZ&df[vs]=1.0&dq=TOTAL.RTOTAL.2020%2B2021%2B2022%2B2023%2B2024.GEO_COUNT&ly[rw]=YEAR_BDS_BDS_002&to[TIME]=false *Household spending on photography, art, or creative services You would be best to check out the 'Household expenditure' and you can find the most recent data here: https://www.stats.govt.nz/information-releases/household-expenditure-statistics-year-ended-june-2023/. Download the 'Detailed household expenditure' file, which gives you a detailed description of the items in each category. Ngā mihi Information Centre Stats NZ
