I am currently conducting a scoping review on the use of acupuncture in combination with exercise therapy for chronic low back pain (CLBP) as part of my dissertation at Auckland University of Technology. I am particularly interested in understanding the prevalence and management of CLBP among Māori populations and would like to inquire if you have any relevant data or resources. Additionally, I would appreciate any guidance on how to effectively gather Māori-related statistics that may be available through your organization.
The findings of this proposed review may suggest that combining acupuncture with exercise therapy provides a multimodal approach that is proven to be more effective in reducing pain and disability. This could result in fewer treatment sessions or long-term therapy, potentially saving hospital services, individuals paying for therapy, medical insurers and ACC, both in provision of therapy and recurrence. By implementing this approach, we can demonstrate to healthcare professionals, policymakers, and organizations involved in CLBP and potentially other forms of musculoskeletal pain management that there are potential cost savings to be made, without compromising on the quality of care.
