A new mandated data standard for gender and sex was recently approved and signed off by the Government Chief Data Steward for use across the Public Service.
The Stats NZ statistical standard for gender, sex, and variations of sex characteristics must now be used by Public Service Departments and Departmental Agencies when collecting, publishing, or sharing data on gender and sex.
Mandated data standard for gender and sex
This does not mean that agencies must collect data on gender and sex. Agencies who do not collect, publish, or share data on gender and sex will not have to use the standard.
The standard does not mandate how agencies store data on gender and sex.
Any new data collections that include gender and sex must comply with the standard.
It is expected that agencies, if not already complying, will move to comply with the standard as soon as possible.
The mandated standards team at Stats NZ will continue to work with agencies to help implement the standard and will be available to answer any questions that you may have.
