About this site is a directory of publicly-available New Zealand government datasets. The site focuses on machine-readable (ie, well-structured and open) datasets, but recognises that "grey" data (for example, web pages) can still be of use to developers and others. We're working with agencies to improve data formatting.

We'd like to know which currently unavailable datasets you'd most like to see published. We're keen to get your ideas.

Thanks to Digital New Zealand, the Open Data Catalogue and other open data initiatives for their inspiration.

For background information about the launch of this site see Internal Affairs Minister Nathan Guy's media release (4 November 2009).

Official Statistics are produced by government departments to provide information for government and government departments, local government, businesses and the general public. Find official statistics on Statistics New Zealand's site, Statisphere, and on government departments’ websites. More about official statistics.
