Kia ora. We’re partnering with iwi leaders and officials to co-design an approach to data governance that can be tested with, and transferred to, other sectors to support more effective Crown Māori relations.
Stats NZ Tatauranga Aotearoa is working with Māori to help build their capability to access more data and use it as a strategic asset.
Data governance that is informed by Te Ao Māori insights and innovation will better enable agencies to achieve integrated and measurable outcomes for Māori.
We’re applying a co-designed Te Ao Māori perspective to the Integrated Data Infrastructure’s Five Safes framework – that’s safe people, safe projects, safe settings, safe data and safe outputs.
The IDI is a large database administered by Stats NZ Tatauranga Aotearoa that links data about people and households, from multiple sources, including government.
The framework is tikanga Māori-based and applies a Te Ao Māori lens to managing access to the IDI.
We’re encouraging all IDI researchers to work with communities that supplied the data in culturally appropriate and ethical ways.
The framework is flexible and is being applied more broadly to projects about ethnic groups, and under-represented sub-groups such as children, the disabled, and the elderly.
We’re also exploring other ways of using the framework across Tatauranga Aotearoa Stats NZ.
